TIPTON ST JOHN TENNIS CLUB 2019/2020

Website: http://www.tiptonstjohnvillage.org.uk/page10.htm

As the days begin to lengthen we start to think of summer evenings on the
tennis courts, but of course tennis doesn
t stop for the winter in Tipton. We
have been running two teams, men
s and mixed, in the winter league. The
men
s team face a stiff challenge in Division 1 and are currently mid-table
with only one game to play, so looking secure to stay up. The mixed team are
currently top of their division, but other teams have a few games in hand so it looks like a close battle for second place (and promotion). Good luck team!

One of the challenges that most local organisations face is finding enough willing volunteers to help keep them running. As with many things, it is a case of many hands make light work...plenty of volunteers and none of the jobs are too big. Whatever local clubs and societies you are involved with, I would encourage you to take your turn of `doing your bit- but of course right now I am particularly appealing to Tennis Club members! A few years ago we separated the Treasurer and Membership roles to make two separate jobs. This has worked really well, but, by chance, this year both these people are stepping down. I would like to publicly give a huge thank-you to Brian Steer and Yvonne Hartland for all they have done for the club over quite a number of years, and wish them all the best in their next enterprises. For all other members, the club does not run itself so please do not just assume that someone else will do it, but please think hard about taking your turn on the committee. This is NOT onerous. We only meet about three times a year, normally in the pub over a pint or a glass of wine so it is really quite enjoyable! If you think you MIGHT be able to help in any capacity (not necessarily the jobs I mentioned) please do contact me on 01404 815181 or via the club email tiptontennisclub@gmail.com and I can tell you more about it.

Ken Mylne (Chairman)

Tipton Tennis Club is a small club with two courts in the village playing fields, beautifully located next to the River Otter right in the heart of the village. We welcome new members of all standards from Tipton and surrounding area.

Our two hard-courts were relaid in 2009 and repainted in 2014, and provide one of the best playing surfaces in the local area. Both courts are flood-lit allowing play all year round and late into the evening. Members enjoy unlimited free use of the courts throughout the year - times may be booked up to 2 weeks in advance except where the courts are reserved for matches and fixed club activities such as club night and coaching sessions.

We run a regular club night all year round on Wednesday evenings from 6.30pm. Some people will know that these rather fell apart, but the good news is that they are now very much up and running again, with at least one of our two coaches on hand to make sure everyone gets a game.

Non-members are welcome to come along to a Wednesday Club Night and give us a try

The Club also runs two men's and one ladies' team in the Exeter and District League. New players are always welcome - please contact tiptontennisclub@gmail.com to be put in touch with the captains.

The club shares use of the Playing Field Pavilion with the village Cricket Club

Family membership is attractively priced to encourage parents (or grandparents) and children to all join and play together. Use of Courts by Visitors

Visitors and non-members are welcome to use Court 2 (nearer the pavilion) provided it is not booked or in use by club members. A key may be obtained from Tipton Garage during opening hours for a charge of £2.50 per person per hour. Please sign the Visitors Book at the Garage. Note that this arrangement is for occasional use and is not a substitute for membership - locals who want to make regular use of the courts are strongly encouraged to join the club. Non-members are NOT entitled to pre-book the court.

====================================================

Floodlights may be used by Adult and Student Members ONLY - Lights are operated from the trip switches and main switch in the cupboard. On is UP! Occasionally they may not fire up first time - switch off and leave a few seconds before trying again. You MUST switch off the lights and lock the control cupboard before you leave. If lights have recently been switched off, please leave 15 minutes before re-lighting as switching on hot bulbs can cause them to blow.

If you have problems, please inform a member of the committee.
